Nahum 3:8-10 "Are you better than No-Amon, that sat by the Nile, with water around her, whose rampart was the sea, and whose wall was the sea? Ethiopia put her strength in her, and Egypt also, without limit; Put and the Libyans were her helpers. Yet she was carried away into exile; even her children were dashed to pieces at the head of every street; and lots were cast for her nobles, and all her great men were bound in chains."
We all know that feeling when everything seems to be in order. The plans are set, the resources are lined up, and it feels like nothing could possibly go wrong.
Maybe for you, it's a healthy savings account, a strong team at work, or a network of friends and mentors you can count on. It's easy to hear that quiet voice inside: We're fine. We've always been fine. We'll always be fine.
The Illusion of Earthly Security
That was Thebes, or No-Amon as Nahum calls it. The city had every advantage you could imagine. For centuries, it sat protected by the Nile, with powerful allies and resources at its back. No one thought Thebes could fall. It was the definition of secure.
And by every human measure, she was right. No army could touch her.
But God was never limited by those walls or that river.
Nahum's question lands hard: "Are you better than No-Amon?" If Thebes, with all her defenses and resources, could fall, what makes us think we're any different? It's a sobering reminder that our sense of security can be more fragile than we realize.
Where Are You Placing Your Trust?
Don't we fall into that very same trap? Many of us build personal fortresses—our savings, reputations, or organizations—and convince ourselves they provide lasting protection. In trusting what we see and manage, we easily lose sight of the true source of our security.
But rivers dry up. Walls crumble. Alliances shift. The real question isn't "How strong is my safety net?" but "Where am I placing my trust?"
Nahum isn't saying we shouldn't prepare or plan. He's reminding us that preparation without trust in God is just another way of trying to stay in control. Thebes had everything going for her and still lost it all in a moment. Even the empire that conquered her didn't last. Earthly security is always temporary.
There's a lesson here for all of us. Nineveh celebrated when Thebes fell, thinking they were untouchable. But God turned the same question back on them: "Are you better than No-Amon?"
The question doesn't change. Neither does the answer. And neither does God.
An Unshakable Foundation
Reflection: What are you trusting in most right now? Take a moment to bring it honestly before God. He isn't looking to take away your security, but to be the foundation under it. Walls and rivers come and go, but God remains steady. He is the one who holds you, no matter what changes around you.
A Prayer: Father, I confess that I build walls and call them safety. I trust in things I can see and touch and control, and I forget that every fortress I construct is only as strong as Your hand upon it. Forgive me for confusing preparation with protection. Today, I choose to place my trust not in the river, not in the walls, not in the alliances, but in You alone. You are the only foundation that cannot be shaken. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
