The Lone Ranger turns to Tonto and asks, “What are we going to do?” Tonto looks at him and replies, “What do you mean ‘we,’ white man?” It’s a humorous illustration, but it uncovers a stark, uncomfortable truth about our broken human condition. The attitude of "I am with you until trouble comes" is utterly destructive to the body of Christ and to human reconciliation. It begs a deeper, more agonizing question: What is the true root of our division?

Looking Past the Symptoms

As the intense conversation about race relations in America continues, it is time to address the heart of the disconnect and lay aside superficial, human remedies. A Lutheran "Theology of the Cross" demands that we call a thing what it is. We must look past the external symptoms and look directly at the reality of the problem.

Who is the enemy we are actually fighting? Is the person with a different skin color your true adversary? Is this a crisis that can be solved simply by spending more time in conversation, passing more civic programs, or making emotional appeals?

Those are merely horizontal symptoms of a much larger, vertical and cosmic brokenness. The significant issue is something our polite, modern world desperately tries to ignore. It is an enemy we rarely acknowledge—one that lurks in the darkness and operates in stealth mode, constantly exploiting our fallen nature.

The Bible pulls back the curtain on this adversary:

"Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour." — 1 Peter 5:8

In his brilliant book The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis captures this dynamic perfectly. He depicts a senior devil, Screwtape, briefing his nephew, Wormwood, on the subtleties of tempting humanity. The ultimate goal, he counsels, is not necessarily overt, cinematic wickedness, but indifference. Screwtape cautions his nephew to keep the "patient" comfortable at all costs. If the human begins to worry about anything of eternal importance, nudge him to think about his lunch plans instead.

Then comes the chilling, definitive job description: “I, the devil, will always see to it that there are bad people. Your job, my dear Wormwood, is to provide me with people who do not care.”

From a theological perspective, this indifference is the ultimate numbing of the conscience. It is the enemy's trick to make us feel self-righteous and comfortable on our own terms, completely blind to our neighbor's suffering.

Who Wins When We Divide?

If we take a step back from the intense emotional ties surrounding race and view the landscape through the lens of God's Word, we have to ask the right question: Who benefits most when this tension intensifies?

America isn’t winning.

The communities under attack are not winning.

The police on the edge, facing intense scrutiny for every split-second decision, are not winning.

White America, which often wants to help solve the problem but is paralyzed by the fear of saying the wrong thing, is not winning.

Every group searching for a path forward seems lost in the suffocating smoke of this tension. Why? Because just like the patients in The Screwtape Letters, we have been duped into compliance.

For years, the Father of Lies has whispered a false peace into our ears: “Nothing to see here. Just live your life. Ignore the poor—the system will handle it. Forget the sins of the past—that was hundreds of years ago. You have enough of your own problems.” This is a spiritual narcotic, breeding a collective ignorance.

When tragedy and civil unrest finally wake us up to the reality of the pain, the enemy quickly shifts tactics to his second favorite trick: he points us toward a false adversary. He convinces us that our neighbor—flesh and blood, made in the image of God—is the problem.

But our true battle is not against your brother or sister of another race, gender, political party, or creed. The real enemy driving this division is the Father of Lies. The true face behind racial discord is Satan himself, seeking to destroy the unity Christ won for us.

Armed for a Different Kind of Warfare

Notice the precise strategy the Apostle Paul gives us regarding this battle:

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places." — Ephesians 6:12

We cannot win a spiritual war with human resources, political activism, or worldly weapons. Look around—this is spiritual warfare at the highest level, and human righteousness alone cannot fix it. Paul doesn't offer a human political strategy; he tells us how to be properly outfitted for the fight. The weapons required are not the ones the world relies on. It is not more civil unrest, more protests, more speeches, or more laws passed only to be ignored. The Law can expose our sin and restrain civic evil, but it can never change a human heart.

Instead, Paul instructs us to take up the whole armor of God—the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, and the shield of faith. Notice that every single piece of this armor is an "alien righteousness"—it is a gift given to us completely from the outside, won by Christ and delivered through His Word. Only this Gospel has the power to break the power of animosity.

To make the concept of "alien righteousness" practical in the context of racial reconciliation and unity, we have to look at how these pieces of armor operate in daily life.

Because this armor is a gift from Christ rather than our own moral effort, using it means shifting from human performance ("I need to prove I'm a good person") to relying on Christ's finished work ("Christ has already made me righteous, so I am free to serve my neighbor").

Instead, Paul instructs us to:

"...take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication." — Ephesians 6:13-18

Here are practical, real-world examples of what it looks like to take up these specific pieces of armor when facing division:

1. The Belt of Truth: Stepping Out of the Defense Mechanism

The Concept: The world tells us to protect our own narrative, our reputation, or our cultural camp at all costs. The "Belt of Truth" grounds us in God's objective reality: we are deeply fallen (peccator), but completely secure in Christ (iustus).

The Practical Example: Imagine you are in a difficult conversation about race, and someone points out a blind spot in your perspective or a systemic issue that makes you feel defensive.

Without the Armor: You get angry, dismiss their experience, or shut down to protect your ego.

With the Belt of Truth: Because your identity is securely anchored in Christ’s truth, you don't have to pretend to be perfect. You can say: "Help me understand that better. I know I have blind spots, and I want to listen to your experience without trying to defend myself."

2. The Breastplate of Righteousness: Quieting the Voice of Guilt and Shame

The Concept: Satan loves to use the heavy, unresolved brokenness of history to paralyze people with guilt or trigger resentment. The Breastplate of Righteousness protects your heart and conscience with Christ's perfection, not your own track record.

The Practical Example: You want to engage in bridge-building or community outreach, but a voice whispers, "Why bother? You haven't done enough in the past, you'll probably say the wrong thing, and people will judge you."

Without the Armor: You stay paralyzed, retreating into comfort and indifference to avoid the discomfort of shame.

With the Breastplate of Righteousness: You remember that you stand before God clothed entirely in Christ's righteousness. You can answer that accusation by saying: "My past failures and future mistakes don't define me; Christ does. I am free to step into this messy conversation and risk being awkward because my standing is already secure."

3. The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Walking Into Hard Spaces

The Concept: In Roman times, military shoes were fitted with studs to give soldiers a firm foothold so they wouldn't slip in the chaos of battle. The Gospel gives us a firm footing of peace with God, which allows us to bring stability into volatile situations.

The Practical Example: A community crisis or an intense social media firestorm erupts, and everyone around you is retreating into their respective angry ideological corners, throwing rhetorical stones.

Without the Armor: You slip into the mud of the conflict, joining the shouting match or matching their hostility with your own.

With the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: You step into the tension as a calming presence. Instead of bringing gasoline to burn a bridge, you bring water. In a meeting or a family dinner where things get heated, you become the one who can de-escalate, asking: "How can we care for the people who are hurting right now, rather than just winning this argument?"

4. The Shield of Faith: Extinguishing the "Flaming Darts" of Cynicism

The Concept: The enemy’s favorite weapon in the work of unity is cynicism. He throws flaming darts of thoughts like: "Things will never change," "They will always hate us," or "This whole effort is a waste of time." Faith redirects our eyes from the bleakness of the cultural moment to the certainty of Christ's victory.

The Practical Example: You’ve spent months trying to build a cross-cultural partnership, a diverse small group, or a community program, and a major misunderstanding threatens to tear the whole thing apart. You feel utterly defeated.

Without the Armor: You give up, concluding that reconciliation is an impossible illusion.

With the Shield of Faith: You actively trust that Christ has already broken down the dividing wall of hostility on the cross, even when you can't see it working perfectly in the moment. You press forward, saying: "The enemy wants us to believe this is hopeless so we walk away. But we are going to forgive each other, extend grace, and show up again next week because Christ's promise of unity is truer than this setback."

Becoming Bridge Builders

The good news is that as God's people, we already have exactly what we need to win. Bound to Christ as both saints and sinners (simul iustus et peccator), we are freed from the fear of the cultural narrative and equipped with the spiritual tools of forgiveness, truth, and sacrificial love.

To become true bridge builders, we must first repent of our indifference, recognize who the real enemy is—and boldly pick up the spiritual tools required to defeat him. Christ has already struck the decisive blow against the true oppressor on the cross. Only when we stand firm in His victory, and stop treating flesh and blood as the adversary, can we begin the real work of healing, reconciliation, and lasting transformation.

If you are passionate about breaking down barriers, fostering deep relationships, and uniting the Body of Christ, you don't have to do it alone.
