As we step into a brand-new topic, let\u2019s look at a familiar story from the Gospels. It completely flips our cultural assumptions about stewardship upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Luke 12:13\u201321, a man completely interrupts Jesus. Christ is in the middle of teaching a crowd about eternal things. The man stands up and shouts, \"Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.\"<\/em> He wants a legal arbitrator. He just wants what he feels he is owed. But Jesus pulls back the curtain on this man's heart. He uses the moment to drop a timeless lesson on biblical stewardship: \"Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.\"<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mystery of the Missing Car<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I love a story told by author Greg Laurie about a woman who had just finished up her grocery shopping. She walked out to the parking lot, located her vehicle, and was shocked to find four men sitting inside it. Understandably terrified, she dropped her grocery bags. She reached into her purse, pulled out a handgun, and yelled at the top of her lungs: \"I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car!\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those four guys didn't wait for a second invitation. They scrambled out of that car and ran like crazy. Shaken up but relieved, the woman threw her groceries into the back seat and hopped behind the wheel. She tried to put her key into the ignition. But no matter how hard she tried, the key wouldn't turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then it hit her: This isn't my car.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

She looked four or five spaces down, and sure enough, there was her actual vehicle. She moved her bags over, drove straight to the police station, and confessed what she had done. The desk sergeant almost fell out of his chair laughing. He pointed to the other end of the counter. There, four terrified men were currently reporting a carjacking. The culprit? A five-foot-tall woman with curly white hair and a massive handgun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a hilarious mix-up, but it uncovers a profound truth. That woman honestly thought it was her car, but it belonged to someone else. And that is the exact doorway into Christian stewardship: much of what we call \"ours\" is actually just entrusted to us by Another.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

He is the Owner, We Are the Managers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\"Biblical<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Scripture tells us this plainly. King David confesses in Psalm 24 that the Lord isn't just the giver of a few nice blessings\u2014He is the Maker and the Owner of the entire creation. The whole earth is His. The prophet Haggai applies this exact same truth to our earthly wealth, reminding us that even the silver and gold we prize so much aren't finally ours. God says, \"The silver is mine, and the gold is mine\"<\/em> (Haggai 2:8).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think of it like checking into a hotel. When you arrive, you might hand your luggage over to a bellhop\u2014a steward. For a short time, he is responsible for those bags. He\u2019s managing them. But they don't suddenly become his<\/em> property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everything we have today comes from God as a gift. As Martin Luther beautifully reminds us in the Small Catechism's explanation of the First Article of the Creed, God has given us our body, soul, property, and all that we have, purely out of \"fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me.\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shifting Our Stewardship Perspective<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

But we have to be careful here. We shouldn't view this \"manager\" role through a rigid corporate lens\u2014like God is some distant CEO tracking our productivity or a demanding boss enforcing a strict contract. In the Christian life, stewardship isn't a heavy legal obligation we fulfill to earn God\u2019s favor. Being a manager is an honor born entirely out of our identity as redeemed, forgiven children of God. We don't manage His gifts to get on His good side; we manage them joyfully because, through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we are already fully loved, fully secure, and fully His.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Illusion of \"Self-Made\"<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When we live under the delusion that we are the absolute owners of our lives, we constantly find ourselves in conflict with God. We end up like the \"Rich Fool\" later in Jesus' parable, who looked at a massive harvest and could only say: my<\/em> crops, my<\/em> barns, my<\/em> goods, my<\/em> soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We fall into that exact same trap of spiritual amnesia when we brag about our 80-hour workweeks, our stress levels, and our bank accounts, saying, \"I earned this lifestyle.\"<\/em> But we forget that we didn't choose our DNA, we didn't create the oxygen we breathe, and we didn't give ourselves the physical health to wake up this morning. The rich man didn't just forget God; he ruined his vocation<\/em>. Instead of looking at his abundance and asking how he could serve his neighbor, he built bigger barns to insulate himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Law has a devastating final word for the self-made myth. God tells him, \"Fool! This night your soul is required of you...\"<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we stand before the holy tribunal, our net worth is completely irrelevant. The spreadsheets, the executive titles, the pristine car in the driveway\u2014none of that stuff gets to walk with us past the grave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gospel Frees Our Hands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Every single day, our sinful flesh tries to drag us back into this mindset of anxiety. We try to build our own temporary kingdoms of \"bigger barns,\" trying to prove our worth by what we can accumulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here is the ultimate plot twist of the text, and the absolute bedrock of our faith: The Gospel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your standing before God does not depend on your ledger. Jesus Christ, who possessed the infinite wealth of heaven, allowed Himself to be stripped completely bare on a cross. He became spiritually bankrupt under the crushing weight of our greed so that you, through your Baptism and through faith, could inherit the unsearchable riches of His grace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When God's Word teaches us that the Lord is the Owner and we are simply His trusted, beloved managers, the Gospel frees our hands. We no longer have to grasp tightly to what we have, because our security is anchored in Christ, not our bank accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As you step into your daily routine this week\u2014whether that is at an office, at home with your kids, or out in your community\u2014you don't have to live to accumulate things for yourself. You are free to open your hands and pour out your life, your time, and your resources as a gift to a divided world, knowing that your eternal inheritance is already completely secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
